Lights on for Learning Virtual Summer Opportunities

21st CCLC Lights On For Learning is offering Edison and Washington Jr. High School students a variety of virtual programs this summer! Availability is first come first serve so don't wait to register!
 
 
Mondays
Session Title: Yoga/Zumba
Session Dates: Mondays, June 15th, June 222rd, June 29th
Session Times: 1 - 3 p.m.
Session Description: We'll partake in some simple yoga and zumba techniques. Join me to learn
some relaxation techniques while also discovering ways to enhance your flexibility, strength,
and coordination. Then, we will speed up the pace and get our cardio on with a little bit of
Zumba.

Tuesdays
Session Title: Surviving The Hunger Games (Book discussion and trivia for The Ballad of
Songbirds and Snakes)
Session Dates: Tuesdays, June 16th, June 23rd, June 30th
Session Times: 1 - 3 p.m.
Session Description: We'll discuss The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes for 20-25 minutes
(longer if there's a lot to talk about), followed by trivia focused on wilderness survival, the
science of natural disasters, and what history can teach us about survival.

Session Title: “Chess 101 - AKA Chess10FUN!”
Session Dates: Tuesdays, June 16th, 23th, and June 30th
Session Times: 1 p.m.- 3 p.m.
Course Description: Virtual Chess - Students will have the opportunity to play chess online with
their peers from Washington and Edison Jr. High. Students will use logic and strategy that can
enhance their ability to not only be better at chess, but also in problem solving in other domains
like mathematics. Our ultimate goal is for students to connect and have fun while
learning/improving their chess skills. Game on! Mr. Copeland and Mr. Carroll are ready!

Thursdays
Session Title: Elements: The Building Blocks of Designing a Photograph
Session Dates: Thursdays, June 18, June 25 and July 2nd
Session Times: 1 - 3 p.m.
Session Description: THREE fun filled activities to learn how a photograph
communicates. When you become aware of these elements, you can incorporate them
into your picture making to become a better communicator.

Session Title: 4-H Food Challenge - Iron Chef
Dates: Thursdays, June 18th, 25th and July 2nd
Time: 1-3 p.m.
Session Description:

First Session: All About Dairy – Milk, cheese, butter, ICE CREAM. Learn about the animal
behind these tasty foods and the processes that turn basic products into edible goodness. In
this lesson you’ll make your own butter, learn how to measure ingredients and make buttermilk
pancakes.

Second Session: Fruits and Vegetables – Do you have your own garden? Have you ever
grown your own food? Did you know that many things we consider vegetables are actually
fruits? Learn more about the nutritional value of fruits and vegetables, and how to make them
fun to eat. You will also learn about and practice knife safety—and make fruit and vegetable
dips perfect for warm summer days.

Third Session: Proteins – Cooking protein requires attention to detail and an understanding of
the product. Learn more about which animal provides different types of meat and what foods
are considered non-animal proteins. You will also learn about the different methods of cooking
meat, and the nutritional benefits behind using certain methods. You will also have a chance to
show some creativity in the kitchen when you make homemade pizza.
